In Sao Paulo Metropolitan Green Belt lies Iterei Fauna and Flora Reserve, officially under private protection, since 1978 (P-163/78IBDF) and an official member of - Unesco (Project BRA022). Iterei is a hot spot , located in the core area, of the Atlantic Rainforest World Heritage- Mab - Unesco. The visitor reaches Iterei by the Mercosul Highway, 50 miles from Butantan, the Institute that holds a collection of live snakes, or just 45 minutes after Embu, known by its artcrafts fair. Iterei is an all season Park, inside the State Wildlife Zone and is proud to be an essential part for a biological corridor protecting this biodiversity. Iterei comprises 200 hectares, stretching along the highest top of the coastal mountain range "Serra do Mar", 750 meters above Peruibe. Trails through the spectacular remnant hillside rainforest cross a wide diversity of 20-30m high trees belonging to Schyzolobium, Vochysia, Ocotea and Nectrandra genera, which sponsors wonderful green scenery. These huge trees are glamorized by epiphytes chiefly pteriodofts or colorful bromeliads and orchids. For the photographer in you! Iterei is natural habitat for several mammals at least 60 species), reptiles &hibians . (over 115 species), insects (too many to count!), birds(over 300 species) including 18 endangered species, data that makes this site, the most important, for neo-tropical endangered avifauna! For the birdwatcher in you! Iterei Fauna and Flora Reserve has a net work of 23 permanent sparkling mountain streams which supplies the Iguape Watershed with pure water resources.
