Heh, you might dig through the mail archives from this list from around that time. In short, some people will call it zealotry. Some people will call it necessary. Some people are in the middle. Reasonable people can disagree about these things, and there isn't one right answer for everyone. However, in regards to the GnuPG default, that isn't an oversight.
