Tani-Rae, The install the newer version part is easy. Download the dmg for your Mac’s processor, open it, and drag GnuCash somewhere that the current GnuCash isn’t. Make a copy of your data file for safety.
But the import problem is probably not related to the GnuCash version. It’s possible that the second-party library (it’s not really third party, the maintainers were GnuCash contributors long ago) doesn’t support the OFX version that NFCU uses. Have you looked in the trace file (see https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Tracefile) to see if there are any error messages? Can you try a different format like QIF or CSV? David’s suggestion to try importing small chunks is a good one, not because GnuCash can’t digest large files but because if you give it small chunks to train on it can learn what transactions go to which accounts which makes it much faster and easier for importing later chunks.
