Actually, it's both. Email clients may show options to reply to list, or they may not. (My Thunderbird email client sometimes does and sometimes doesn't.) But there is a special header line, Reply-To, that is part of the standard email protocol. If you simply select Reply, all email clients are supposed to direct the reply email to the address on the Reply-To line, and as far as I know all do. The mailing list admins have chosen not to use that option, which would solve the problem of people just hitting Reply and having their email not go to the list. But I remember there was extensive discussion of this, some months ago, and the consensus was that setting Reply-To: gnucash-user@gnucash.org while it would solve the carelessly-sending-to-one-person-instead-of-the-list problem, would cause some other problem. I can't remember what that problem was, but as far as I can recall everyone accepted that it would be worse than people having to learn to remember to send replies to the list.
