Roger, FYI over the last 11 years or so I've updated to every Windows version of Gnucash released on my Win7 pc - currently running version 4.5 on it. It's running Win 7 Ultimate which is a 64 bit OS but I've never had any problems, I've never ever run or had any reason to run check and repair on it. So you might want to try just doing the upgrade on the Win7 pc and then copy the 4.5 version of the datafile across to the Win10 box after upgrading on Win7 if that works for you?
If you want to do the upgrade on Win10 I think I'd be installing the exact same version (2.6.21) on the Windows 10 machine, copying the gnucash data file over AFTER doing a check and repair in Win7 and then opening in 2.6.21 on Win10 first to make sure that it all looks good. Then I would start trying to follow the upgrade process on Win10. My feeling is that you should run 2.6.21 at least once on Win10 BEFORE trying to upgrade. Whatever you do make sure you keep backups of your files. Cheers David H.
