As I stated previously, the developers want want no entry to reflect the 
default. In this case, the default preference is to display zero balance 
accounts. Your alternative requires a value for the default (Display zero 
balance accounts is checked for the default), whereas the existing setting does 
not require a value for the default (Display zero balance accounts does not 
require a value for the default).

You can argue with the decision behind this, but I don't think you'll get very 
far. It's been part of the Gnucash fabric for a long time.

Probably clearer to demonstrate same default functionality with different
user interface:
* Default is Off with On to Omit - double negative ??
* Alternative default is On with Off to Omit - consistent and logical on a
*Display* tab ??
