I believe this is https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645518 which is
already fixed in SVN trunk and 2.4-stable branch. Your backtrace mentions
gnc_ui_account_get_tax_info_string which is exactly that bug. It will be fixed
in upcoming version 2.4.5 and any other upcoming version.

Thanks, trunk from svn works properly. I did have to update guile-dev from guile-1.6-dev to guile-1.8-dev in order for configure to suceed.

. I have several account sets, only some of
which have this problem. Another account has the problem with both
Income and Expense accounts. If I export the account tree and open that
(i.e., the same tree but with no transactions/data), then it expand just
fine. I've attached the console output. This also occurs when I try
to edit the options in the Income statement (probably because it's
trying to expand the Income tree).

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10, and I have several copies of GC (the
'official' Ubuntu 2.2.9, 2.4.0, 2.4.3 and 2.4.4). These 2.4 versions
are each in their own local directory (created with e.g. "./configure
--prefix=/home/dave/local43 --with-html-engine=webkit
--enable-aqbanking"). I haven't tried any of this with the SQL backends.
