Not that I disagree with you, but except for CMU in the 1980s and 90s
I have never seen anyone use something OTHER than 127.0.0.1 for
localhost. Having said that, I think only forcing the resolution
internall for G_OS_WIN32 is just fine.

Right, it's rarely, if ever, done. However, I hate to make it impossible. That could really surprise someone someday.
