Or better yet, internally replace "localhost" with "127.0.0.1"?

Yes, in principle, because having a solution that works is better than having something which won't work on some systems. However, the numbers look very ugly compared to the name "localhost". Can you make that an #ifdef on G_OS_WIN32, and leave it at localhost for the other systems?
