OK, following up on an idea from Heath Martin, I did a lot of digging
around in my environment trying to figure out what it is that causes
gnucash to make my X server grow without bound. In the end, it comes down
to my ~/.gtkrc file:
# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT
include "/usr/share/themes/BrushedMetalBlue/gtk/gtkrc"
include "~/.gtkrc.mine"
# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT
(~/.gtkrc.mine doesn't exist)
The file certainly got put there as I was dinking around with themes with
an early version of GNOME a long time ago.
When the file is present, the memory problem happens. When the file is
absent, no problem.
All in all, it points at a GTK problem rather than a gnucash problem, I
guess, though no other application shows this particular behavior. For my
own purposes, I can do without the "brushed metal" texture on my buttons
and get on with life. Time to start griping about the lack of scheduled
transactions...:)
