Why don't you just use a table? Original: +--------+---------+ | n = 1 | second | +--------+---------+ | n =! 1 | seconds | +--------+---------+ That would properly scale (even visually) to any number of plural forms. You'd have to manage this as a dynamic user interface interally, but what counts is what the user sees, not how it has to be implemented.
