Ah, I see; this is also something that Thunderbird itself really takes care of - the old plugin read email addresses only from abook..mab (address book), I added code to read them from history.mab as well (both files are in pretty much the same format as far as I can tell). Thunderbird will automatically store addresses of all your email recipients in the history; adding them to the address book requires a manual step.
