Hmm. The newest gcc for Fedora 7 is gcc 4.1.2-27. RHEL 5.0 had gcc 4.1.1-52 and 5.1 had 4.1.2-14. I've been using Gromacs in CentOS 5 (an RHEL 5 clone) without any problems using the default compiler and system libraries openmpi, fftw3 and so on. Try just with ./configure .
