He's already at 1.10 according to the mail :-)

Unfortunately automake is notorious for repeatedly breaking constructs that worked perfectly fine and didn't even generate warnings in the previous release.

You could try to debug what it is complaining about (something with the as assembler), and perhaps try to add AM_PROG_AS somewhere in configure.ac. We'll probably fix it when it's time for a new release, if not sooner.

Otherwise, you can always install automake-1.9.x in a separate location and (temporarily) put that first in your path.
