I'd be interested to know some details on this as well.

So far I've just submitted my patches, but some changes I'm working on now
may be too specific to my organization to make it into the core product.
 I'd make them into a plugin but I'm still trying to wrap my head around
creating a plugin rather than modifying the core code.
