I gave up, unplugged that monitor, then discovered that the main output from the Lenovo is also showing just the normal background without the bottom left "Menu" icon or the lower panel. Ctl+Alt+F2 showed me a normal GUI login screen but with no keyboard input, Ctl+Alt+F3 allowed me to login via a text screen, while Ctl+Alt+F1 reverted to GUI background only. The computer has been restarted, left off for a while and then re-started, but I can't find any relevant Menu item, I can still do a remote ssh login, but KDE appears to have crashed, and the only option I seem to have left is to re-install Debian.
