Well, shortly after the reboot, the symptoms resumed... =:-(
When I tried to restart gitlab via gitlab-ctl, sidekiq refused to shut down 
cleanly. Once it was killed and gitlab restarted, the symptoms disappeared.

I'm attaching the (sanitized) sidekiq log from this morning (pre-reboot), 
in the hopes someone can point me to a solution or at least where to 
concentrate my efforts...
