## Which issue does this PR close? - Closes #26880 ## Rationale for this change There's currently some drift between how different planning stages and layers merge field metadata for unions, which can cause errors at multiple stages. ## What changes are included in this PR? The main change here is unifying the metadata merge logic in `datafusion-common` and using it in both the logical and physical layer. I've also ran the existing benchmarks in `union_schema` and made sure they keep the gains from #26790. ## What is the testing strategy for this PR? Added a couple of tests from the original issue and unit tests. ## Are there any user-facing changes?
