Use the layers dialog to switch layers, toggle visibility, adjust
opacity, etc.  A decent tutorial from a quick search:

I'd make sure the image you are pasting is smaller than or equal size
to the one you're pasting into - at least for now.  Once you get the
hang of working with layers, it won't be a big deal: if you paste a
larger image onto a smaller one, you can use the scale tool to reduce
it afterward.  But for now I suggest experimenting with similar-sized
images until you feel comfortable with the layers dialog.
