July 2016 - The UN Environment Management Group (EMG*) establishedan ad hoc
Issue Management Group on the sound management ofchemicals in 2014 and
undertook a mapping of activities and initiatives in theUN system that
contribute to the achievement of the WSSD 2020 goal on chemicalsand waste
management either directly or indirectly, collecting information onUN system
and other relevant agencies’ contributions and perspectives on thesound
management of chemicals.

A synthesis report of these efforts - “United Nations and SoundChemicals
Management: Coordinating delivery for Member States and sustainabledevelopment”
– is now available. It signals the importance of soundchemicals management to
the broader sustainable development agenda, showcaseswhat has already been
accomplished, and indicates how the UN system can furtherassist Member States
in achieving sound chemicals management in the context ofsustainable
development.
In support of the findings of the report, all 48 members of theEMG, along with
the OECD, issued a statement to step up joint and coordinatedefforts to promote
the sound management of chemicals as a critical component ofthe 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development and the SDGs.
