Stefan,

I have been working with a test map that just has a couple of layers to see if
I can figure out what is going on. I will try what you have suggested to see
what it reveals.

Thanks again.

Hi Jerome,
when you open your OpenLayers-page with the layer in it just right click on it
and let it show you the requested picture directly. There are two
possibilities: You get an image which is correctly delivered but with no
polygons in it or you get an error message from geoserver which perhaps tells
you more about what is not working.

But it seems to me that geoserver is rendering correctly because the
log-entries indicate correct requests.

How about reducing your openlayers to the minimum number of elements?

Cheers
Stefan
