I don't have a mandate to also backport hits to 1.0, but once you are in
the business of making a custom
WFS client (a standard one won't support paging over 1.1 or 1.0 anyways)
you can always make
a WFS 1.1 request to ask for the total amount of features.
In fact the WFS 1.0 feature collection response does not have room for the
number of hits anyways
(it misses the attribute, it was added as part of the WFS 1.1 spec)
