Somehow today's "sync" broke things. 

Things seemed to be OK after manually updating perl-IO-Compress
and removing perl-IO-Compress-Zlib:

  emerge perl-IO-Compress
  emerge -C perl-IO-Compress-Zlib

Maybe someday I'll understand Portage, but I doubt it -- it's
been 5 years.
