I've found that for over a year now, digest has actually been creating the Manifest files as well. Things get a bit hazy for me here, but reading between the lines I believe that portage-2.1.* has always supported the new and old formats -- Alan McKinnon alan dot mckinnon at gmail dot com -- gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org mailing list
