Digests in the portage tree are an old obsolete feature that has just recently finally been removed from the tree. Now gentoo uses a much better Manifest scheme. 'ebuild <ebuild-name> digest has done nothing for quite some time now (at least a full year maybe?), and the manifest option is the one that works.
