Dear All, Thanks for the advice. I just successfully completed the transfer of my gentoo installation to the new hard drive. I was able to install grub on the external drive successfully, obviating the need to boot with the live cd after swaping the drives. I did however have one problem with the dev/ being a little messed up, but I followed the instructions in the /etc/issue file and that fix the problem, as far as I can tell :-)
