dump/restore does not work anymore. for years. tar/mkfs/tar is the right way to do backups/restores. Plus, you can keep fragmentation down, if you let enough space free. With lots of small partitions, the partitions will always almost filled up, which leads to more fragmentation. Also, the more partitions, the more the heads have to move around.
