Thanks, folks. Yes, I have followed the instructions, for both Gmail and sSMTP. (I've actually set up Thunderbird to use Gmail's SMTP server with my two non-Gmail accounts. It's great.) sSMTP is the problem: The clearest documentation I've found for setting up STARTTLS with sSMTP is located in someone's ssmtp.conf on a pastebin-style service. (Read: There is no documentation that I can find.) Scanning the forums and list archives produces a lot of "Yeah, I have that problem too."
