In any case, it doesn't work, or not here. After reading 'man sddm.conf' I set
DisplayServer=x11 in /etc/sddm.conf.d/01gentoo.conf, rebooted, set up my
desktops as I wanted them and logged out and in again.
Everything was piled up on Desktop 1, as before.

Regards,

Hi Peter,
It doesn't matter what SDDM is using - it can launch either an X11 or Wayland Plasma session for the DE in question.
Use the dropdown in SDDM to select a Plasma (X11) session and you should be fine.
Sorry for top-post - on mobile!
