>From your dmesg output, it looks like you have some kind of hardware problem. Have you double checked that your cabling and hardware configuration is good? Some things to check: 1. That the burner is jumpered correctly for 'master'. 2. The IDE cable is not damaged (you might just want to replace it with a spare, if you have one). 3. The IDE cable is not more than 18" long. I think this one is really really really critical. 4. If you have another device on the same channel, make sure it is configured as a slave. 5. If 4 is true and the other device is a HD, the HD should be hdc and the burner hdd. And an 80-conductor cable would be required in this case I think. Your dmesg output didn't show the IDE device configuration messages from when the kernel booted..too many IDE errors.
