Because the html tags used in this file are fairly limited, I just dropped all instances of <.../> and then substituted the proper '<' and '>' for the < and > tags. sed, awk, etc. work fine for this. It doesn't work as a general-case solution, though. However, i'm dropping that now to use the text form directly.
