This is obviously a question for the new podling's PPMC and the existing Groovy community mailing lists to decide, but in most other situations auto-subscribing people to a new list is usually a bad idea.
I would definitely give people plenty of notice and clear instructions on how to unsubscribe before blindly moving subscriber lists from anywhere else to an Apache mailing list. Even better would be some way that people could explicitly opt-in to the new list by signing up somewhere (i.e. somewhere simpler than the ezmlm send subscribe mail, reply to the reply confirmation dance), and not auto-subscribing.
