Does the Apache Software Foundation accept project proposals that are industry domain focused?
I'd like to begin the process of proposing a new Hadoop based project like Mahout for Machine Learning but Hadoop for Genomic Analysis. There appears to be a lot of momentum in the enterprise and academia in applying Hadoop and MapReduce to genomic datasets. To foster development and potentially ensure that algorithms are working from a set of standard datasets and common tools it could be valuable to consolidate efforts into a single project.
