Unfortunately, Java has a special meaning for the term "package".
Personally, I'd use the term "artifact" to describe anything that is released, can be checksummed and for which a detached signature can be created.

I find the common usage of the word "distribution" in the Java world (as a surrogate for package or archive file) to be a terribly confusing mess when it comesto dealing with the nuances of Apache release management issues.
