The name "Sponsoring Entity" is wierd, and the more I think of it, the more it seems artificial.
Yup. It was the best I could think of at the time :<.
What we need is something that sponsors the project, and will accept it, and someone that mentors the project, which are 2 concepts, not 3 as now.
Hence I propose that we have:
- Sponsor: the Apache entity (PMC) that sponsors the project and that will recieve it upon succesfull incuabtion. - Mentor: the Apache member or Sponsor PMC member that will assist in incubation. He will become part of the Incubator PMC.
The only issue then is that we loose the original
concept of the sponsor. While the distinction
between sponsor and sponsoring entity was
artificial, I think it was useful.
So the sponsor was the individual Apache member who would champion the cause of the candidate project with the relevant sponsoring entity, help the candidate through those initial stages and be a champion for the podling once it was accepted.
We still need this role (at least prior to
acceptance by a "sponsoring entity" or whatever
we want to call it now) I think. However I like
the idea of calling the "sponsoring entity" the
sponsor, as it's more natural. For the purposes
of documentation why not something like the
candidate "champion" for the original sponsor idea?
