The documentation should help you getting started. Please remember that ALL dependencies listed in http://www.gem5.org/Dependencies are REQUIRED. So install everything before building gem5.
If you want to follow the source code, then apart from debug messages, using gdb would be extremely helpful. If you want to run the linux kernel itself, then let me know.
