GRÉGOIRE MUNSTER OUT TO CONFIRM MATTER IN THE SPA RALLY. ------------------------------------------------------------ Last Sunday Henri Schmelcher (VW Polo GTI R5) claimed victory on the Rallye de Hannut, a strongly filled field in the ASAF Championship. This is Schmelcher’s first victory in Hannut, and his first ever victory with an R5. This coming Saturday he will be at the start of the Spa Rally, where also Charles Munster (Opel Adam R2), Pieter-Jan Michiel Cracco (Skoda Fabia R5), Kevin Hommes (Skoda Fabia R5) and Grégoire Munster (Hyundai i20 R5) will be present. Both Munster brothers are out to confirm the excellent performances they put in during the Rally of Haspengouw Both for Cracco and Hommes this will be their first competition in the championship. Following on from the Rally of Haspengouw Henri Schmelcher was well prepared to tackle the Rallye de Hannut, an event he has competed in for at least thirty years. This event boasted a strong field and poor weather conditions. “The weather also complicated the choice of tyres and in the beginning I got it completely wrong”, Henri Schmelcher admitted. “But we still managed to produce three top times. Following the downpour just after midday I really felt at ease in the BMA VW Polo. With three stages still to go I decided to consolidate my 1 minute down on the leader and my 30 sec advantage on my nearest rival. With still one stage to go the arrear was down to 18 sec. Just then it started to pour with rain which resulted in a fair amount of aquaplaning. Conditions were really difficult. Nonetheless it didn’t hold me back from giving it my all. I produced the fastest time and to my complete surprise I had converted my arrears into grabbing the advantage. After thirty years I now have finally clinched victory in this event. That’s awesome! My thanks go out to my co-driver Kathleen Ombelet, and to BMA who produced a fabulous car for me. On Saturday I will be at the start of the Spa Rally. This year my ambition is to finish within the top 10 in the Belgian Rally Championship. Roll on the Spa Rally.” Pieter-Jan Michiel Cracco is once again fit and well and will be competing in his first Jobfixers Belgian Rally Championship. “As the result of a bacterial infection combined with the ‘flu my body was attacked from different angles. Following 5 days in hospital, with the necessary rest and medication I’m now ready to tackle the Spa Rally. In the past I have always performed well there. The approach might well be different this time around. The major difference is that my father is no longer with us. More than ever I want to drive and enjoy myself, something different from working and having fun. With 16 R5 machines at the start I’m aiming at a mid-range result. A place in the top 8 would suit me down to the ground.” After their entry in their home event, namely the East Belgian Rally last year, the Hommes brothers have once again opted for an R5. “According to Bernard the Skoda Fabia would have been a somewhat easier car”, Kevin Hommes commented. “No tests were carried out beforehand. In fact I will be covering my first metres with the car during the shakedown on Friday. Luckily, I’m someone who can quickly adapt to new conditions so I’m not too concerned. We carried out a recce during the weekend. Similar to the East Belgian event, Spa also has a fast course, with the big difference being that here the roads are worse. Recent weather conditions have ensured that the course will remain pretty greasy. My ambition is to match my 11th place of the East Belgian or to improve on it. Taking into account the competition it will not be easy.” Grégoire Munster comes out in the Rallye de Hannut in fourth place. “The overall ambition is to confirm matters. Spa is a rally that suits me down to the ground. I’ really looking forward to be at the start with my Hyundai. The appearance of Mikkelsen has added some spice. For me this in the ideal opportunity to go head to head with an experienced driver.” Charles Munster just missed out by a 0.6 sec hair’s breadth from claiming victory among the Junior in the Rally van Haspengouw “This will be my first participation in the Spa Rally. The recces last weekend soon showed me that this will be an entirely different competition from that of two weeks ago. The typical parcelled type of roads make way for a both fast and technical course interspersed with a fair amount of treacherous sections. Last week’s rain also means that the special stages are now pretty greasy. Not much improvement if one takes into account the weather forecasts. It doesn’t worry me. I quite enjoy rain, or least if it’s competing in a rally. The ambition remains the same as that of the Haspengouw: I’m out to win the classification in the Juniors. Even without the presence of Gilles Pyck competition remains pretty strong.” Last weekend BMA was also active in Kenya where Tejveer Rai (VW Polo GTI R5) and Onkar Rai were competing in the Nyahururu Rally, the second round of the Kenyan Championship. The event was held in perfect weather conditions on a typical African course. These gravel roads are both challenging for man and machine. In the third special stage Onkar Rai was obliged to thrown in the towel with his VW Polo due to suspension issues. Pour Schmelcher, il s’agit d’une première victoire en Hesbaye, et même de sa première victoire au volant d’une R5. Samedi, il se présentera au départ du Spa Rally, où Charles Munster (Opel Adam R2), Pieter-Jan Michiel Cracco (Skoda Fabia R5), Kevin Hommes (Skoda Fabia R5) et Grégoire Munster (Hyundai i20 R5) seront aussi de la partie. Les frangins Munster veulent confirmer les bonnes choses entrevues lors du Rally van Haspengouw. Pour Cracco et Hommes, il s’agira de leur première apparition dans cette compétition cette année. Au sortir du Rally van Haspengouw, Henri Schmelcher était bien préparé pour aborder le Rallye de Hannut, événement auquel il prend part depuis une trentaine d’années déjà. Cette édition était caractérisée par un plateau très solide, mais aussi de mauvaises conditions météorologiques. “Le temps a aussi compliqué les choix de pneus. Et en début d’épreuve, j’étais totalement à côté, commente Henri Schmelcher. Ce qui ne nous a pas empêchés de signer des chronos dans le top 3. Après l’averse violente peu après midi, je me suis senti totalement à l’aise au volant de la VW Polo BMA. Alors qu’il restait trois spéciales à disputer, j’ai décidé d’assurer, comptant une minute de retard sur le leader et une trentaine de secondes d’avance sur mon poursuivant le plus proche. A un tronçon de l’arrivée, l’écart sur le leader avait fondu à 18 secondes. Et à cet instant, il a de nouveau commencé à pleuvoir, ce qui a entraîné pas mal d’aquaplaning. Les condition s étaient réellement délicates. Ce qui ne m’a pas empêché de tout donner. J’ai signé le scratch, et à mon grand étonnement, le retard s’est transformé en avance ! Ce qui m’a permis d’enfin remporter cette épreuve à laquelle je participe depuis trente ans déjà. C’est fantastique ! Merci à ma copilote Kathleen Ombelet, et merci à BMA de m’avoir fourni une voiture aussi exceptionnelle. Samedi, je prendrai le départ du Spa Rally. Et cette année, en Championnat de Belgique, mon objectif est de terminer dans le top 10. Pour moi, cela pourrait arriver à Spa.’’ Pieter-Jan Michiel Cracco est totalement remis côté santé, ce qui va lui permettre de prendre part à sa première épreuve du Jobfixers Belgian Rally Championship 2020. “En raison d’une infection bactérielle et d’une grippe, j’étais littéralement cassé en deux. Après cinq jours d’hospitalisation, le repos nécessaire et le traitement adéquat, je suis prêt pour le Spa Rally. Par le passé, j’y ai toujours signé de bonnes performances. L’approche est désormais différente. Le principal changement, c’est que mon papa ne peut plus être là. Je veux plus que jamais rouler pour le plaisir, me sortir le travail de la tête et m’amuser. Avec seize R5 au départ, je lorgne sur un résultat au beau milieu de ce peloton. En fait, une position finale dans le top 8 m’irait très bien.’’ Après une participation à leur épreuve à domicile, l’East Belgian Rally l’an dernier, avec une R5, les frères Hommes retrouvent ce genre de bolide. “Selon Bernard, la Skoda devrait s’imposer comme une voiture plus facile à dompter pour nous, explique Kevin Hommes. Il n’y aura pas eu de test préalable. C’est seulement lors du Shakedown de vendredi que je vais effectuer mes premiers mètres avec la voiture. Je m’adapte généralement assez vite à de nouvelles circonstances, ce qui signifie que cela ne m’inquiète pas outre mesure. Nous avons reconnu le parcours durant le week-end. A l’instar de l’East Belgian Rally, le Spa Rally se caractérise par un tracé rapide, à la différence près que les routes de cette partie du pays sont moins bonnes. Les conditions météorologiques ont en outre rendu le parcours particulièrement glissant. Mon objectif est de faire aussi bien que notre 11ème place à l’East Belgian. Voire de l’améliorer. Si l’on tient compte de la concurrence, ce ne sera pas évident.’’ Grégoire Munster a entamé sa saison par une quatrième place au Rally van Haspengouw. “Ce week-end, je veux avant tout confirmer. Spa est un rallye qui me convient bien. Je me réjouis de me retrouver au départ au volant de la Hyundai. La venue de Mikkelsen constitue un plus indéniable. C’est pour moi une occasion unique d’affronter un pilote très expérimenté.’’ Au terme du Rally van Haspengouw, Charles Munster a loupé la victoire chez les Juniors pour 6 dixièmes de seconde. “Il s’agit de la première participation au Spa Rally. Les reconnaissances du week-end dernier m’ont confirmé qu’on se retrouve face à une épreuve totalement différente de la précédente. Les chemins de remembrement cèdent la place à un parcours très beau, rapide, mais aussi technique, assaisonné de quelques pièges. La pluie des derniers jours a eu pour conséquence que les spéciales sont très glissantes. Et selon les prévisions météorologiques, cela ne va pas s’améliorer. Mais cela ne me dérange pas. J’aime la pluie, du moins quand il s’agit de piloter en rallye. L’objectif reste le même qu’à l’Haspengouw : je veux remporter le classement Junior. En dépit de l’absence de Gilles Pyck, la concurrence reste très solide.’’ Le week-end dernier, BMA était également actif au Kenya, où Tejveer Rai (VW Polo GTI R5) et Onkar Rai ont disputé le Nyahururu Rally, deuxième manche de la compétition nationale kenyane. L’épreuve s’est déroulée par de superbes conditions météorologiques, sur un parcours typique de l’Afrique. Les chemins sur terre sont autant de challenges pour les hommes et les machines. Onkar Rai a été contraint de ranger sa VW Polo sur le bord de la route lors de la troisième spéciale, en raison de soucis de suspension. Voor Schmelcher is het zijn eerste zege in Hannuit, zijn eerste zege ooit met een R5. Zaterdag komt hij aan de start van de rally van Spa waar ook Charles Munster (Opel Adam R2), Pieter-Jan Michiel Cracco (Skoda Fabia R5), Kevin Hommes (Skoda Fabia R5) en Grégoire Munster (Hyundai i20 R5) aan de start komt. De broers Munster willen al het goede dat ze getoond hebben in de rally van Haspengouw bevestigen. Voor Cracco en Hommes wordt het hun eerste wedstrijd van het kampioenschap. Henri Schmelcher kwam na de rally van Haspengouw goed voorbereid aan de start van de rally van Hannuit, een wedstrijd waaraan hij al ruim 30 jaar aan deelneemt. Deze editie werd gekenmerkt door een sterk deelnemersveld en bijzonder slechte weersomstandigheden. “Het weer bemoeilijkte ook de bandenkeuze. In het begin zat ik er helemaal naast”, zegt Henri Schmelcher. “Toch slaagden we erin om top drie tijden te rijden. Na de stortbui kort na de middag voelde ik mij in de BMA VW Polo helemaal in mijn sas. Met nog drie ritten te rijden besloot ik met 1 minuut achterstand op de leider en met 30 sec voorsprong op mijn eerste achtervolger te consolideren. Met nog 1 rit voor de boeg was de achterstand geslonken tot 18 sec. Op dat moment was het opnieuw hard beginnen regenen en zorgde de stortregen voor heel wat aquaplanning. De omstandigheden waren bijzonder moeilijk. Dat alles weerhield me niet om toch alles uit de kast te halen. Ik reed de snelste tijd en had ik tot mijn eigen verbazing mijn achterstand omgebogen in een voorsprong. De wedstrijd waar ik al 30 jaar aan deelneem heb ik nu eindelijk kunnen winnen. Dat is fantastisch! Dank aan mijn copiloot Kathleen Ombelet, dank aan BMA die mij een fantastische wagen hebben bezorgd. Zaterdag start ik in de rally van Spa. Mijn ambitie is om dit jaar in een wedstrijd van het BK rally in de top 10 te eindigen. Van mij mag dat in Spa gebeuren.” Pieter-Jan Michiel Cracco is opnieuw helemaal fit en rijdt dit weekend zijn eerste wedstrijd van het Jobfixers Belgian Rally Championship. “Door de combinatie van een bacteriële infectie en een griep werd mijn lichaam aan twee kanten aangevallen. Na een hospitalisatie van 5 dagen, de nodige rust en medicatie ben ik klaar voor de rally van Spa. In het verleden heb ik er altijd vrij goed gepresteerd. De insteek wordt nu mogelijk iets anders. Hét grote verschil is dat mijn papa er niet meer bij kan zijn. Ik wil meer dan ooit rijden voor het plezier, iets anders doen dan werken en me amuseren. Met 16 R5’s aan de start mik ik op een resultaat ergens halfweg. Een plaats in de top 8 zou mij welgevallen.” Na hun deelname aan hun thuiswedstrijd, de East Belgian Rally vorig jaar, kiezen de broers Hommes opnieuw voor een R5. “Volgens Bernard zou de Skoda Fabia voor ons een iets makkelijkere wagen zijn”, vertelt Kevin Hommes. “Voorafgaandelijk wordt er niet getest. Ik zal dus pas tijdens de shakedown van vrijdag mijn eerste meters met de wagen rijden. Ik ben iemand die me vrij snel aanpast aan nieuwe omstandigheden en dus schrikt dat me allerminst af. Tijdens het weekend hebben we het parcours verkend. Net als de East Belgian Rally heeft ook Spa een snel parcours, met dat verschil dat de wegen hier veel slechter zijn. De weersomstandigheden hebben ervoor gezorgd dat het parcours er bijzonder vettig bijligt. Mijn ambitie is om de 11e plaats van de East Belgian te evenaren of te verbeteren. Rekening houdend met de concurrentie wordt dat niet makkelijk.” Grégoire Munster debuteerde in de rally van Haspengouw met een vierde plaats. “De ambitie van dit weekend is om te bevestigen. Spa is een rally die mij ligt. Ik kijk ernaar uit om er met mijn Hyundai van start te gaan. De komst van Mikkelsen zorgt voor extra piment. Dit is voor mij een mooie kans om het op te nemen tegen een zeer ervaren rijder.” Charles Munster kwam in de rally van Haspengouw 0.6 sec tekort voor zijn eerste zege bij de Junioren. “Dit wordt mijn eerste deelname aan de rally van Spa. De verkenningen van afgelopen weekend leerden mij dat we een totaal andere wedstrijd als twee weken geleden zullen krijgen. De typische verkavelingswegen maken plaats voor een mooi, snel en tegelijk een technisch parcours gekruid met nogal wat valstrikken. De regen van de afgelopen dagen zorgde ervoor dat de klassementsritten er behoorlijk vettig bijliggen. Afgaande op de weersvoorspellingen zal het er niet op beteren. Mij deert dat niet. Ik hou van de regen, tenminste als het is om rally te rijden. De ambitie blijft dezelfde als in Haspengouw: ik wil het klassement bij de Junioren winnen. Ook bij afwezigheid van Gilles Pyck blijft de concurrentie stevig.” Het afgelopen weekend was BMA ook actief in Kenia waar Tejveer Rai (VW Polo GTI R5) en Onkar Rai deelnamen aan de Nyahururu rally, de tweede wedstrijd van het Keniaans kampioenschap. De wedstrijd werd in prima weersomstandigheden op een typisch Afrikaans parcours gereden. De onverharde wegen zijn uitdagend voor mens en machine. Onkar Rai moest in de derde klassementsrit zijn VW Polo aan de kant zetten met ophangingsproblemen.
