This is not how C works. Perhaps instead of

  if (x < y)
    ...
  else
    ...

(where "else" means "in any other case"), you want:

  if (x < y)
    ...
  else if (x >= y)
    ...

Then if x is NaN and/or y is NaN, neither the "if" nor the "else"
will be executed.
