It's hard to remember back to those days, but basically it was because
of concerns people wouldn't appreciate the fact that the development
versions were just that and known to be buggy, would use them anyway,
and badmouth GCC.  Now it's quite common to have these sorts of "unstable"
versions of Free Software out there, so people are aware of this, but back
then this was more "uncharted territory".
