I have some patches to get the GCC tree more or less in shape
for git autotools, with the idea being that the most recent
stable version be used when merging these patches.  In some
way I can only hope that GCC 4.5 branching take a little longer
so Automake 1.11 can be released first ... ;-)
(and an Autoconf 2.64 release would be good as well, since that
would probably shave MB worth of size off the GCC tarball.)

But anyway, the idea was to cleanup and post patches sometime
soon after 4.4 branches.  And no, I don't think it's worth
switching to any version older than the latest stable one.
