FWIW I agree with Vlad and Paolo Bonzini.

It seems as if 4.2 was branched with critical flaws (it happens, no
biggie). In addition to the alias issues, and the resulting SPEC
issues, and the compilation slowdown issues vis-a-vis 4.1 and current
mainline.... then seeing this kind of commentary in a patch:

Doesn't give me great confidence in the quality or long-term
maintainability of gcc-4_2-branch. In addition, it seems as if pre-df
may be a better starting point for the middle/back end people (but I
am not a good judge of this.)

I'd rather we suck it up and re-branch rather than fjord though
unknown depths with the current issues.
