Using the cctools from Xcode 2.4, the failure changes and moves to the linkage
of libgfortran itself...

So if there is a usable cctools, it doesn't exist outside of Apple. I wonder if
the literal16 patch was meant for Darwin intel only as I understand they don't
use stabs, etc at the moment.

No, it was meant for everything, it might only work with the cctools that was handed out at WWDC though. I've been looking around and can't find them though. I'll keep you updated.
