My guess is that this is a problem with the bootstrap compiler. There is a known issue with all 3.3 releases that require compiling stage 1 with -O1. I think there's also a problem with the 4.0 releases. See for example http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=24822. 3.4.4 and 3.4.5 seem to be ok based on my testing.
