Would you elaborate?  I found myself reasonably convinced by Steven's
explanation.

I guess a secondary question is: is the workaround sufficiently useful
in many of the problematic cases and sufficiently non-harmful in other
cases as to merit inclusion, given that we don't have a better solution?
