Yes, it's true that this is why I thought it was not important enough to fix in GCC 3.4.x. However, I am no longer managing releases from the 3.4.x branch, so it's up to Gaby to decide if he wants to reopen the issue. (I've cc'd Gaby on this message.) Geoff's patch in Comment #11 is clearly too big to backport to 3.4.
