Since there is a big brainstorming, I will sum up my opinion here (and then stop spending time on this issue). From the discussion, it looks like the switch seems the most important constraint imposed by the switch is about hardware/software requirements, and I do strongly second this point.
For example, some of us have to work on machines on which they're not root. I asked my sysadmin to install subversion, and it was done a month and a half later (two weeks ago). I know will have to ask him for svk, then again a newer svn (and perhaps a updated openssh, but that surely will be refused). And I'd rather not install all that myself, cause users are on shared disks with quotas. Another example: ever tried asking the sourceforge compile farm team for an update? they're still "considering" updating MacOS 10.1. So yes, there are solutions for some of the issues some of us have, but they all look a bit complicated. Well, maybe gcc this discussion would be spared if gcc contributors were only people supported by their company. But that's not the case. FX
