One reason is that many people write open-source packages that can't be cross compiled (there are far too many autoconf scripts around that try to build executable test programs). Robert, please stop trying to shoot the messenger. The problems are real, and users often cannot 'fix' these problems themselves. Just like they can't 'fix' the compiler bloat themselves. R.
