What you describe is how the conversion into gimple occurs, have you found a problem with it? I'm not sure whether you are trying to confirm that this is how gimple operates, or you have a problem with it.
There is documentation about GIMPLE in the GCC internals manual. Also, -fdump-tree-gimple produces a dump file with the input program in GIMPLE form. Diego.
