If not configure will use 'as' in your path > and find your host assembler instead. Actually, it seems that it is *not* sufficient to have the excecutables of the binutils in your search path. I just had moved the binaries in /usr/local/bin to some other location within the search path. Configure, however, did not find them and switched to the host-as without any complaint or error message :-(. When forcing configure by --prefix=/MyDirectoryWithTheBinaries/ to use another path, everything works fine.
