The canonical form can be found in gcc/libgcc2.c:
[...] (The General Public License restrictions do apply in other respects; for example, they cover modification of the file, and distribution when not linked into a combine executable.)
(Been wondering about this for a while...) Possibly this is one of those North American dialect things, but to this (non-American) English speaker this canonical form appears to contain a typo.
"[...] when not linked into a combined executable", surely?
